The Truth About the Apocrypha and the Lost Books of the Bible
Another set of extra-canonical books are known as pseudepigraphal and sometimes Lost Books of the Bible, or Gnostic gospels. These were mainly written during the first few centuries after Christ and have unknown authors. Pseudepigrapha means fake author they are falsely attributed to an apostle. As an example, the Gospel of Peter was not written by the apostle Peter. This alone answers the question of why they were not accepted as canonical. But a closer perusal of their content also would make it obvious why these are not recognized as Scripture.
There is also an Old Testament Pseudepigrapha . It too fails the marks of authenticity and being God-breathed. On occasion they will not only contradict other writings, but they do not match up to the rule of faith. These works typically fail all three tests of canonicity.
There are some letters and writings from the first couple centuries after Christ which are helpful and beneficial but were not considered to be authoritative. Some of these, like the Shephard of Hermas, were widely read and considered to be beneficial but they ultimately failed the test of being self-authenticating.
The Wisdom Of Solomon
Even though the name King Solomon appears nowhere in the text, some believe that The Wisdom of Solomon was written by him.
The early church rejected this because of an ancient manuscript called the Muratorian fragment that makes reference to the book being written by the friends of Soloman. The Catholic Church continues to believe that Soloman did not write this book. Of course, there is no way to know for certain who the author is.
The book touches a lot on the subject of wisdom throughout Proverbs but it was never widely accepted because there are no references to Jesus.
Shes the brightness that shines forth from eternal light. Shes a mirror that flawlessly reflects Gods activity. Shes the perfect image of Gods goodness.

There are many verses in this book that really go against what we all know and trust as Christians. We understand that the only way to heaven is through the Father. We know this is one of the most important pieces of salvation. Yet this book describes a different way to gain salvation.
Only then did your ways become clear to us on earth. Only then were humans able to learn what pleases you, and were thus rescued by wisdom.
Thus were the paths of those on earth made straight, and people learned what pleases you, and were saved by Wisdom.

How Many Books Are Missing From The Bible
The Bible is complete and there are no books missing from the written Word of God, and very few scholars say otherwise. After 2000 years of intense study, the Bible has withstood the test of time.
Any texts and books not found in your Bible are deemed extra-Biblical or non-canon, meaning they were not inspired by God.
Just as the Council of Nicea didnt invent the doctrine of the deity of Jesus , church groups didnt recognize the 66 books in the Bible as canon out of nowhere.
All parts of Scripture were recognized as the true Word of God because they met the important criteria mentioned above. And this is all part of Gods majestic plan.
With that being said, lets take a look at a number of extra books that are not inspired, yet some people falsely think they are missing from the Bible:
Apocrypha or Deuterocanonical Books
The Apocrypha is a compilation of 14 books that are found in Catholic Bibles. These non-canonical texts were accepted by the Catholic Church and added to their Bibles at the Council of Trent from AD 1545 to 1563.
Now lets just think about this for a minute.
After rejecting these books as non-canonical for over 1500 years, the Catholic Church does a complete turnabout and suddenly decides these books belong in the Bible.
Keep in mind the timing of this event. Its after the Protestant Reformation that was started by Martin Luther.

Do Catholics Use The King James Bible
It refers to Romes Diocese, but it can sometimes be mistakenly used to mean the Latin Rite of the Roman Catholic Church. The major difference between the Catholic Bible version and the King James Version of the Bible is that the modern King James Bibles have removed all the Deuterocanonical books from the Old Testament.

What About The Lost Books Of The Bible
In modern studies of the NT canon, there is a lot of discussion with so-called lost books of the Bible. So, we have recent book titles like Lost Scriptures, Forgotten Scriptures, and The Lost Bible.
In fact, scholar Philip Jenkins even wrote a whole book documenting the academic communitys fascination with this theme: Hidden Gospels: How the Search for Jesus Lost Its Way.
So what do we with these other books of the New Testament? A few quick thoughts.
First, most of these books werent really lost. The early church fathers were very much aware of these other books. Indeed, they knew them well enough to recognize they were not authentic apostolic writings.
So, no one hid or suppressed these books. On the contrary, early Christians were quite open about the problems with these books and overtly stated why they should be rejected as part of the biblical canon.
Second, most of these lost books werent really that popular. Unfortunately, many modern studies of canon give the impression that early Christians read these lost books in droves. It was only when later church authorities decided to clamp down, we are told, that the popularity of these books waned.
But the historical evidence says otherwise. Yes, church fathers occasionally used apocryphal gospels. However, when we consider the frequency of citation of apocryphal gospels vs. the canonical ones, its not even close.

How Many Books Are In The Bible
The Bible is often thought of as one book. However, it is actually a compilation of 66 different books written by 40 different authors. These authors were not all connected to each other, most did not even know each other because these books were written over a period of approximately 1500 years.
What makes the Bible so unique and special is that even with this large time gap between the first book written and the last book written, there is a consistency of thought and messaging. There is no other book that can match that. Though there continues to be skeptics today, this type of accuracy and consistency could only be accomplished by the hand of God.

The Bible would look very different were all the Apocrypha included in the book. There would also be very different portrayals of Christ found in the Bibles pages if texts such as the Infancy Gospel of Thomas were included. Though these texts are not found in biblical canon, Christians can now read many of them due to the tireless work of translators. Ancient texts continue to be translated today, and more hidden gospels continue to be found. The pendulum appears to have swung back the other way. Rather than an ever-shrinking canon, the complete list of Bible books is only continuing to grow.

Complete Bible With All Books
From the beginning, the Bible has been a fluid text. The books that made it into our modern-day New Testament, for instance, were chosen from among dozens of early Christian texts. And even when the New Testament canon was settled upon in 367 CEonly 76 years after Constantine was baptized on his deathbedthe book of Revelation still almost didnt make it in.
Today, we might assume that the books of the Bible are fixed forever. But new discoveries and revelations could always change whats considered canonical and what isntand for good reason: God have never been shy about changing their minds over what words should appear in Holy Scripture.

Baruch is Jeremiahs scribe and is considered the author of this entire book. The book is a reflection of the circumstances involving Jewish exiles in Babylon. In fact, the book is actually written directly to the citizens of Jerusalem with guidelines that they should follow. The book focuses on wisdom and many believe it was written during the period of the Maccabees.
Nonetheless, this is one of the most widely accepted pieces of the removed books and it is still present in the Greek Orthodox Bible and the Vulgate Bible which also contains the Letter of Jeremiah.

The Second Book Of Adam And Eve
Adam and Eve mourn their son Seths death in the first chapter. The second chapter is where they mourn the death of their son Seth. They mourn all their children who died before they reached adulthood.
The rest of the book is about them. Its like a sad Lifetime movie where everyone dies in childbirth or by getting hit by a car while running away from their abusive husband/wife/lover/childhood friend who they had secret feelings for but never acted on because everyone knows that makes you an adulterer and no one wants to be an adulterer so then you die at age 34 from cancer because its better than living with someone who doesnt love you back anyway so why not do whatever makes them happy?
The Bible Is A Unified Book
In Scripture, we see one God, one Creator, and one plan of grace from initiation, through execution to consummation. From predestination to glorification, Scripture tells the story of God redeeming the people of God for His glory.
The redemptive purpose and plan of God unfold in Scripture. The recurring themes of Gods character, judgment for disobedience and sin, the blessing of faith and obedience, the Lord and Savior, and His sacrifice for sin and the coming Kingdom and glory are the focus of Scripture.
The Lords intent is for man to know and understand these themes because our lives are bound up in them. It is unthinkable that the Lord would allow Scripture to be lost in any way.
Scripture is complete, so those who read and understand it might also be complete, and equipped for every good work .

The History Of Susana
This was chapter 13 in the book of Daniel until it was removed by the Protestant Church. It is considered an example of proper manners. The story starts with a wife named Susanna who was accused by voyeurs. These men were spying on her while she was bathing and then demand that she have sex with them.
She of course refused and they arrest her, claiming that she sent her maids away so she could have sex with a young man under a tree. When she is put to death the young man Daniel shouts out that the two men should be questioned separately to see if their stories align.
The result is that their stories do not align because they each tell the authorities of a different kind of tree where the act occurred. The two men are then sentenced to death.

This text is not found anywhere in the original Hebrew Bible and its not cited in Jewish writing either, but it does appear in some early translations. The origins of the text are obscure and no one knows if they were from the originally composed Hebrew text or if they came from another source.
At this point, there isnt a lot of information on this scripture and that could be the reason why it was never included in the Bible. Much of the text that couldnt identify a source was left out due to fear of inaccuracy.
How Can We Be Confident That The Bible Is God’s Complete Word
Are There Lost / Missing Books of the Bible?
With all of these disputed books, how can we be confident that we have Gods complete Word? Ultimately our trust in Scripture is a trust in Christ and His ability to faithfully rule over His Bride. Yes, we have been filled with schism. Yes, there are differences of interpretation. But Jesus clearly believed that Scripture was authoritative and infallible. He believed that the history which was presented was legitimate. Are we to believe that the God who governed all of history so that at just the right time a baby was born in a manger, is unable to govern history in such a way to preserve His Word? Of course not.
You can have confidence in your Bible. You can have confidence that the books you have in your Bible are indeed the Words of Scripture. The Scriptures are self-attesting. Reading Gods Word in 1 Timothy will do something different than reading the words of 1 Clement. One is God-breathed, the other is not. Yes, you can find helpful things in 1 Clement, but it will not be self-attesting in the same way 1 Timothy will be. There is not the same power in 1 Clement that there is in 1 Timothy. We can have confidence in Gods Word because it, unlike other literature, does not return empty or void. Gods Word is living and active. Literature is not.
